Message from the Dean
Welcome to the online portal for the Brooklyn Chapter of the AGO, celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2010/2011. We cordially invite you to come visit our wonderful Borough and partake of its many cultural treasures. In particular, we encourage you to come to see and hear the many marvelous organs of our home, known as the Borough of Churches for its many houses of worship. Brooklyn has many fascinating instruments, and the Brooklyn Chapter continues to feature a wide variety of these instruments in our programming.
In this spring of 2011, we are particularly excited to offer a trip to experience the newly restored organ of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on January 17. In February, we will offer a lecture- recital on the life and work of Calvin Hampton, led by Hampton biographer Jonathan Hall at St. Ann & the Holy Trinity Church in Brooklyn Heights. March 5 brings us together for a workshop with composer David Hurd, who will take us through the new collection of his complete hymns. In May, we will for the first time offer an introduction to the organ specifically designed for adults: Pedals, Pipes & Pinot, at Grace Church in Brooklyn Heights. And of course, we meet regularly for food and fellowship along the way. See our Programs link for details on all of these programs.
While you are visiting our website, take a look to see the listings of other concerts offered by our members. There is always a rich variety of music being offered by the talented AGO members in our churches. And to see more about the organs of Brooklyn, follow the link to the NYC Organ Project, with its thorough and fascinating information on the many instruments in our Chapter.
So, come to Brooklyn, Borough of Churches! Visit our many wonderful restaurants, Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Museum, the Botanical Garden, the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. . . the list goes on and on. But above all, come and enjoy the programs offered by the Brooklyn Chapter of the AGO. We look forward to welcoming you for music and fellowship in the greatest city- within-a-city: Brooklyn.
