Our History
The American Guild of Organists was chartered in 1896 in New York City. Its second-ever public event was held in Brooklyn in 1897. Dudley Buck, the first Honorary President of the American Guild of Organists, had a deep and longstanding relationship with Brooklyn, serving as Organist of the Church of the Holy Trinity from 1877 to 1902. His tenure as Honorary President was from 1896 to 1899.
The Brooklyn Chapter of the American Guild of Organists was granted a chapter charter in 1960 and serves New York City’s most populous and diverse borough. From the start, Brooklyn has been energetically and profoundly engaged in the life of the Guild. Along with the Queens Chapter and the New York City Chapter (serving Staten Island, the Bronx, and Manhattan), the Brooklyn Chapter celebrates the King of Instruments and its players in a community that is both iconic and forward-looking. The Guild provides opportunities for continuing education, musical enrichment, support for certification, outreach, and fellowship among members and non-members. We’re proud that we reflect the cultural, ethnic, and religious diversity of this great Borough, and we are committed to advocacy for the pipe organ in this remarkable place.
